Despite the ease of access that streaming has brought to the distribution of music, the volume that's released can make it a daunting task to find unique new stuff every week. In this recurring weekly feature we put together a short list of new songs that stand out amongst all the noise and deserve a spot in your rotation.

All songs featured in this recurring series can be found in our scrmbl selection 2025 playlist on Spotify or Apple Music.

kinoue64 — "Higaisha"

The intersection of shoegaze and Vocaloid isn't a new development — we're over a decade out from mikgazer vol. 1 — yet the ability to get fresh emotional power out of the combo continues. "Higaisha," the opening number to kinoue64's latest album, lurches ahead on sludgy riffs before letting the sweeter vocal melodies of Hatsune Miku navigate the fuzz layers. While sounding brighter, the lyrics themselves delve into darker territory of self-loathing, working with the music to create something constricting yet rich. Listen above.

Maegami Pattsun Shonen — "Desk Pop!"

Listening to the latest from Maegami Pattsun Shonen one might find it hard to believe that this is only their 4th release as a group. "Desk Pop!" is an expertly crafted pop tune with the kind of production you would expect from veterans in the music scene. Singer OSHANZ・NE's whispery vocals float perfectly above a perfectly poppy backing track peppered with little piano flutters and complimented by some brilliant bass licks. It's a strong outing for the young group that shows immense potential.

ME:I — "MUSE"

Sometimes newer pop groups — especially those tied to a K-pop company or trying too hard to borrow from South Korea's music scene — do a little too much. Everyone wants to make a good first impression, but cramming in rap breakdowns and sudden stylistic shifts into a single song can be headache-inducing rather than charming. Bless ME:I, formed out of a Japanese reality competition, whose latest single "MUSE" gets busy but never comes off as such. Despite some skittery passages, the song mostly zooms forward, aided by some jazzy piano touches and horn blurts. A lot goes on, but it never gets lost from the core catchiness. Listen above.

QPLO — "Happy Fire (ItoShin Remix)"

Tokyo-based QPLO released the track "Happy Fire" as a single last year and demonstrated the disco house sound they've been crafting since they came onto the scene. Despite how perfectly crafted the original was for the club, this week saw the duo release a pair of remixes for the track, with a take from ItoShin that dials the house-vibes up to maximum levels. As remixes go it's quite a departure from the source, ItoShin only borrows what's needed from the original track, and the end results is a track destined for the dancefloor.

RUNG HYANG — "MOMENT"

RUNG HYANG has had quite a busy 2025 already with her new track "MOMENT" being the 4th release since the beginning of the year. The track is a total groove with a toe-tapping beat complimented by a smooth melody and bassline that only serve to amplify her fantastic vocal performance. We also can't ignore the perfectly executed Korean rap-breakdown in the first quarter of the track which blends in seamlessly. The end result is just a joy to listen to, and par the course for someone of RUNG HYANG's pedigree.

Uilou — "Perfect Tokyo"

Electronic duo Uilou have previously offered up agoraphobic dance tunes, yet on latest single "Perfect Tokyo" they step out into the city lights. The pair nod to Pizzicato Five's " tribute to the possibilities of Japan's capital "The Night Is Still Young," matching the heartracing beats while offering a modern sleekness. It's a euphoric embrace of what can happen after the sun sets tinged with a slight melancholy knowing those moments and connections can be fleeting, but zipping into them all the same. Listen above.
