Despite the ease of access that streaming has brought to the distribution of music, the volume that's released can make it a daunting task to find unique new stuff every week. In this recurring weekly feature we put together a short list of new songs that stand out amongst all the noise and deserve a spot in your rotation.
All songs featured in this recurring series can be found in our scrmbl selection 2025 playlist on Spotify or Apple Music.
Producer and rapper AssToro comes from the digi-damaged "hyperpop" sphere, but the charm of latest track "noise cancel" comes from the moments when the music itself coagulates into dance ecstasy. The verses are all hip-hop hop-scotch, but come the chorus the synth melodies behind AssToro sync just right to create an electro-pop fever dream working wonderfully with his manipulated vocals. Virtual artist Toto Hoshimiya's voice is a versatile musical tool. She's worked wonders over skippy UK garage, nervier rock and discombobulated electronic compositions. On Kohei Shimizu's "D.U.S.K.*" she's jogging alongside a mix of emo-streaked guitar melodies and floor-ready beats. It's a mix calling for emotion and speed, but she's up for the challenge, managing to match the uptempo nature while still weaving in a sense of melancholy. Listen above.
If you've been following the underground Japanese club scene for a while then Nhato is a name you have likely seen on your journey. The versatile producer is known for everything from trance to drum & bass, and this latest track sees him diving into the tech trance end of the pool for a new banger with driving bass and synth lines that range from hypnotic to earwormy.
There's most certainly a metaphorical side to Sala's latest song "Peak," built around overcoming challenges and progressing up the slope that is life. Yet it's also literally about hiking up a mountain, something made clearer in the video. Either way, she offers up a sturdy bedrock of midtempo r 'n' b to explore rock terrain both figurative and physical. Listen above.
Suchmos is back. After several years of inactivity the group has dropped a new EP in their signature style. If you're familiar with their previous output there's a lot to love on this new release, but the lead single "Eye to Eye" is a standout. Effortlessly groovy, certified for heavy rotation.
In the minds of many Tomoyo Harada is still a superstar, so getting new music from her is always a welcome treat. The former 80s idol delivers a mellow pop track in her latest single "Hoho ni Kaze". The song is a stark contrast from her recent output both in the overall style but also how her smooth organic vocals juxtapose against the electronic backing track.
